¿Why so Serious? ;)

I still feel so young at oil painting. There's so much I don't know. I've been reading these old books and they all suggest spending about a year just painting in monochrome. Understanding values and brushwork I believe is the point of this exercise. I want to try it for at least 6 months. I know there will be some color practice along the way, but I want to really give this a shot, as not to miss out on something important these old guys may be suggesting.

I'm willing to walk, if that's what it takes to run.
